Kenmore
Refrigerator PUR Ice & Water Filter Replacement Guide
How to replace the PUR 9030 (4396710) ice
& water filter in a Kenmore, Whirlpool, Maytag or KitchenAid refrigerator.
Kenmore Refrigerator |
New Whirlpool Filter |
KitchenAid, Maytag, Amana |
This home
appliance maintenance guide was specifically written to assist
owners of the Kenmore Coldspot side by side refrigerator (model #
106.58943801) in replacing the push button dual ice maker and
drinking water filter. Owners of other side by side refrigerator brands manufactured by Whirlpool such as Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Kenmore (Sears), Nutid (Ikea), and Admiral (Home Depot) may also find these instructions to be helpful. The original ice/water filter in our refrigerator was a Kenmore branded PUR Ultimate II part # 9030. Compatible replacement filters include the Whirlpool PUR # 4396710, the PUR PBSS, and the PUR W10193691 (Home Depot $39.99). No tools are needed to complete this filter replacement procedure. Have a roll of paper towels nearby for any water spills. |

Push Button In |
Pull On End Cap |
Slide Out Old Filter |
The refrigerator
has a built in water filter bypass valve so there is no need to turn off the
cold water supply.
To eject the old filter, firmly push in the button situated just to the left of the filter's plastic end cap. Then place your index finger into the empty space on the lower half of the filter's plastic end cap and pull the old filter out. Keep the other end of the old filter pointed upwards to keep it from leaking water. |

Twist off the plastic end cap on the filter by turning it a quarter turn counter clockwise and set it aside.
New Filter & End Cap |
Remove O-Ring Cover |
|
Remove the red plastic protective cover on the new filter and attach the plastic cap to the other end by turning it 1/4 turn clockwise.
Slide In New Filter |
End Cap Opening On Bottom |
Push Firmly In Place |
Orientate the new
Kenmore
filter to where the open part of the end cap is on the bottom and gently
slide it in to the receptacle.
It will only go in one way, so don't use excessive force. Push firmly on the end cap until the eject button pops out flush with the rest of the bottom grille. Gently tug on the end cap to make sure that the new filter is securely locked in place. |
||
Flush Out New Filter |
Discard Funky Ice |
Clean Ice Dispenser Tray |
The new water
filter may contain fine carbon particles that need to be flushed out before
use.
Place a large pitcher or measuring cup below the drinking water dispenser. Fill and empty out the container several times until the water looks perfectly clear. This could be anywhere from 1 to 3 gallons. Keep the container close to the dispenser tube as it may spray out water while any air bubbles are worked out of the new Kenmore filter. I also chose to discard all of the old ice in the ice maker dispensing tray since it smelled like chlorine and caused drinks to taste bad. To be sure that I got all of the old ice out, I rinsed out the bucket with warm water and wiped it dry with a paper towel. |
