This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second generation 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 Nissan Qashqai and the 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 Nissan Rogue Sport (USA) with the MR20DD 2.0 liter inline four cylinder engine in checking, cleaning or changing the engine air filter element.

Owners of other Nissan, Infiniti or related Renault vehicles such as the Rogue, X-Trail, Note, Versa, Altima, Maxima, Sentra, Juke, Kicks, Murano, Pathfinder, Armada, Frontier, Titan, Quest, NV200, Q50, Q60, QX50, QX60, QX80 and Renault Kadjar may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A few compatible replacement engine air filters with their part numbers are as follows: EcoGard XA10423, Fram CA11858, Spearhead MT-858, K&N 33-5016, Premium Guard PA99032 and Purolator A28177.

The tools needed to access and replace the filter include a 10mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet or a Phillips head screwdriver, a flat head screwdriver and possibly also a pop rivet removal tool.

The first two steps are to open the hood and then move to the right (driver) side of the engine bay.

The MR20DD engine has a large and complicated looking black plastic air intake system that needs to be removed before you can access the filter box.

Locate the black metal bolt at the front outer edge of the air intake assembly situated behind the driver side headlight housing.

Loosen the bolt by turning it in the counterclockwise direction with the 10mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet. You could also use a Phillips head screwdriver.

Set the bolt aside in a safe place.

Move to the front edge of the air intake assembly and locate the two round black plastic fasteners.

Use the flat head screwdriver to gently pry up the small round button in the center of the fasteners to unlock them.

Then pry out the base of the fasteners with the flat head screwdriver or use a pop rivet removal tool.

Release the right side latch by pulling it forward towards yourself.

Then release the left side latch.

Check Box For Debris
Gently pull open the air box to access the old filter.

Slide the old filter straight out of the box.

Check the air box for any large debris such as leaves, insects or twigs. Clean out any debris by using the crevice attachment on your vacuum.

Lower In New Air Filter
Inspect both sides of the old filter.

If the old filter is dark grey or black and clogged with dirt, dust, soot, pollen, sand, leaves, insects, hair, twigs and other debris, it should be replaced with a new element.

I recommend buying the Spearhead MT-858 engine air filter since it has excellent reviews on Amazon including from other Rogue Sport owners.

If the old filter is relatively clean, just tap out the large debris and remove any fine dust with a wet/dry shop vacuum.

Check your new filter for an "air flow" arrow. Orientate the new filter with the air flow arrow pointing towards the rear of the vehicle.

Lower the new filter down into the air box.

The smaller round button or "pin" in the center of the plastic fasteners should be in the up and released position.

Push in the base of the plastic fastener into the hole and pop in the button to secure it in place.

Lower the front half of the air intake assembly down into place.

Spin in the metal bolt a few turns by hand in the clockwise direction to prevent it from becoming cross threaded.

Tighten the bolt by turning it in the clockwise direction with the 10mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet or you can use a Phillips head screwdriver.

Then replace the two plastic fasteners along the front edge of the air intake.

Make sure the air intake assembly is securely in place and all of the fasteners have been replaced.

Be sure to write down the filter change in your car's service records.

The maintenance schedule in the owner's manual specifies that the engine air filter should be replaced every 30,000 miles (48,000 km) or at least every 36 months.

I also recommend checking and cleaning the engine air filter during every oil change which should be done after 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or every 6 months.
