This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second generation 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 Nissan Qashqai and the 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 Nissan Rogue Sport (USA) in changing a burnt out rear turn signal bulb in the tail light housing or upgrading both lights to brighter LED units.

Owners of other Nissan, Infiniti or related Renault vehicles such as the Rogue, X-Trail, Note, Versa, Altima, Maxima, Sentra, Juke, Kicks, Murano, Pathfinder, Armada, Frontier, Titan, Quest, NV200, Q50, Q60, QX50, QX60, QX80 and Renault Kadjar may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The compatible replacement amber colored rear turn signal light bulb part number for this 2020 Rogue Sport is WY21W (also known as 7440A or 7440NA).

If you would like to have brighter rear turn signals, install some WY21W LED bulbs.

The earlier 2017, 2018 and 2019 model years plus some trim levels of the 2020 model year may instead be equipped with clear rear turn signal light bulbs which are part number W21W (also known as 7440).

Please check your owner's manual and your old light bulbs before purchasing new parts.

The tools needed to access and replace the bulbs include a 10mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and possibly also a plastic pry bar tool.

The first two steps are to open the tailgate door for the cargo area and move to the side of the SUV with the burnt out rear turn signal light bulb.

Two Bolts Removed
Locate the two black metal bolts on the black plastic inner edge of the tail light housing.

Loosen the two bolts by turning them in the counterclockwise direction with the 10mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet or a 10mm wrench.

Set the two bolts aside in a safe place.

Peg - Hole, Slot - Button
The tail light housing is still held in place by two sets of friction fasteners.

There is a slot on the front outer edge of the housing (closer to the front of the SUV) attached to the white plastic button head of a pop rivet. Plus a peg or "spike" inserted into a plastic grommet.

Carefully pull the tail light housing straight back towards yourself to remove it from the rear corner of the vehicle.

If you have trouble removing the tail light housing, you can try gently wiggling it back and forth a bit or very carefully use a plastic pry bar tool to loosen the friction fasteners.

1/4 Turn Counterclockwise
Turn over the tail light housing to access the bulb sockets.

(The brake / stop lamps are LED bulbs that should last the life time of the vehicle.)

An optional step is to disconnect the electrical connector for the tail light housing. To detach the power plug, push in the release button and slide it straight off.

Rotate the gray plastic base of the rear turn signal light bulb socket 1/4 turn in the counterclockwise direction before pulling it straight out of the assembly.

Pull Out Old Light Bulb
Carefully pull the old light bulb straight out of the socket.

If you have trouble removing the old light bulb due to corrosion (rust) or debris in the socket, try wiggling it back and forth while pulling it straight out. It would also be a good idea to wear gloves.

Try to avoid using excessive pressure on the bulb to prevent it from breaking and cutting your fingers.

1/4 Turn Clockwise - Lock
The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) light bulb in this 2020 Rogue Sport was an amber colored number WY21W.

Earlier model year Qashqai and Rogue Sport vehicles might be equipped with clear W21W (also known as part number 7440) bulbs.

Push a new light bulb straight into the socket.

Clean off any grease, oil or dirt on the new incandescent bulb with a paper towel and some rubbing alcohol. If there is any oil on the new bulb, it may create a hot spot which could cause the bulb to burn out prematurely.

Tip - If you installed an LED bulb and it doesn't work, remove it from the socket, rotate it 180 degrees and push it back into the socket. Some LED bulbs are "polarized" and only work when the "+" positive and "-" negative electrical contacts are in the correct orientation.

Re-insert the bulb socket into the housing and rotate it 1/4 turn in the clockwise direction to secure it into place.

If you detached the electrical connector, hold the tail light housing near the rear corner of the SUV and push it back into place.

You should hear or feel the power plug "click" securely into place.

Line up the slot and peg on the front of the tail light housing with the grommet and pop rivet button on the rear corner of the vehicle.

Slide the tail light housing back into place.

Test New Turn Signal
Replace the two bolts and tighten them in the clockwise direction with the 10mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet until they are snug.

Try to avoid over tightening the two bolts to prevent from cracking the black plastic inner edge of the tail light housing.

To test the new rear turn signal light bulbs, activate the hazard signals.
