This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second generation 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 Nissan Qashqai and the 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 Nissan Rogue Sport (USA) in changing a weak, failing or faulty lift support struts for the manually operated tailgate (not the optional "power liftgate").

Owners of other Nissan, Infiniti or related Renault vehicles such as the Rogue, X-Trail, Note, Versa, Altima, Maxima, Sentra, Juke, Kicks, Murano, Pathfinder, Armada, Frontier, Titan, Quest, NV200, Q50, Q60, QX50, QX60, QX80 and Renault Kadjar may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) part numbers for the support struts are as follows: Nissan 90451-6MA0A or 90425Q (LH - Driver) and Nissan 90450-6MA0A or 90424Q (RH right hand - passenger side).

A set of compatible replacement tailgate lift support struts (also known as "prop rods", "shocks" or "springs") are part number Lift Support Depots PM3802.

The only tool needed to remove and replace the struts is a standard flat head screwdriver.

I highly recommend having an assistant help you hold up the tailgate while you replace the struts.

Please proceed with caution and at your own risk.

The first step is to open the tailgate. I used a large old towel wedged in between the strut and the tailgate to help keep it open while I replaced the strut on the other side.

Have you assistant hold the tailgate up with both hands.

Insert the blade of the flat head screwdriver into the notch on the black metal "C" shaped retaining clip at the top of the old strut.

Gently pry out the "C" shaped retaining clip with the screwdriver.

You don't have to fully remove the clip.

Just pull it out enough so that you can detach the strut's mounting socket from the ball shaped mount attached to the vehicle.

Use your finger or the screwdriver's handle to firmly push in the "C" shaped metal retaining clips.

Double check that the new strut is securely attached.

Repeat the process to change the strut on the other side of the car.

If you used a towel or a piece of cardboard to wedge the tailgate door in the raised position, remove it.

To test the new struts, close and open the tailgate a few times.

Be sure to record the procedure in your SUV's service records.
