Besides
Halloween, one of my favorite events in the month of October is the
"Oktoberfest" festival hosted by the American-German club of the Palm
Beaches. The 34th annual Oktoberfest in 2007 was held on six dates including October 12th, 13th, 14th, 19th, 20th, and 21st. The gates opened at 5pm on Fridays and closed at 11pm. Saturday event hours were from 12 noon to 11pm, while Sunday hours were from noon to 8pm. Adult admission was $7.00 while children under 12 years of age were allowed in for free. We paid the $10.00 parking fee and were able to park only a few steps from the entrance to the party. Our first stop was at the ticket booth next to the Bavarian Festhaus to buy tickets to sample all the German beer and food. None of the concession booths accept cash, just tickets, which keeps the lines moving quickly. |

Some of the tasty drinks available at Oktoberfest included Warsteiner "The #1 Beer in Germany", Miller Lite, Pepsi, "Jager Bombs", Schnaps, Goldschlager, and Jagermeister. Beers were served in 16oz (ounce) cups or pitchers. I guess if you want to drink out of a big beer stein with a hinged lid, you have to bring your own.

I've been to the South Florida Oktoberfest a few times and still haven't tried all of the different food on the menu. A few of the delicious options are the sauerbraten pork schnitzel, black forest cake, apple strudel, bavarian bbq pork sandwich, potato pancake dessert with applesauce, bratwurst with kraut, German bread, leberkase, bauernwurst, and rotisserie chicken. There were plenty of booths serving up the grub in the Bavaria Festhaus, under the big tent, in the pavilion area, and outside the main kitchen.

The featured entertainers at Oktoberfest 2007 were three musical acts direct from Germany - "Die Filsbacher", "Die Palzer Buam" and Wolfgang Weber. Other performers at the event included "King Ludwig of Bavaria", "Cookie the Clown", the Sea Turtle Tappers, the Palm Beach Pipes & Drums, the Tirna Greine School of Irish Dance, the Ukrainian Dancers of Miami, the Edelweiss Schuhplattler Gruppe of Miami and the Parade of Flags.

Another exciting feature of this year's Oktoberfest was a sweepstakes drawing each Sunday for two round trip tickets to Germany courtesy of LTU International Airways. The other sponsors of the festival besides LTU included the Gater 98.7 FM radio station, The Palm Beach Post, 960 Seaview AM Radio, C-B-I, Thies Distributing and The Palm Beach Post.

After enjoying a pitcher of Warsteiner, some bratwurst and potato pancakes we went over to the Lisko & Sons Carnival to get dizzy on a few of the rides. They had a deal going where you could pay $20 and get unlimited rides on Saturdays and Sundays between 12 noon and 6pm. Unfortunately, we arrived too late to take advantage of that offer but maybe next year.

By the time we finished sampling some of the rides in the carnival midway, it was getting close to the 11pm closing time. On our way out of the Oktoberfest grounds, we stopped to check out the product vendor booths, media tents, and the Ladies Auxillary of the American-German club souvenir t-shirts booth.

If you missed these good times, the American-German club also hosts Friday Night Dinner Dances, 3rd Sunday of the Month Picnics, and other events. See you next year at the 2008 Oktoberfest of the Palm Beaches! Be sure to also check out my pictures from the Sun Fest Music Art & Waterfront Festival held in downtown West Palm. |
