This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second generation (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014) Smart Fortwo compact city car in changing a burnt out overhead dome (also known as the "map") light bulb in the translucent plastic housing attached to the headliner.

Owners of any Smart Fortwo models or trim levels such as the coupe hatchback, cabriolet or "cabrio", electric, pure, passion, forfour, prime and proxy may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The compatible replacement "festoon" style light bulb is part number 6411 which is available from various manufacturers such as Sylvania, GE, Eiko and PIAA.

You can also use a brighter compatible LED bulb.

The only tool needed to access and replace the light bulb is a small plastic pry bar tool or a flathead screwdriver.

Old Light Bulb Exposed
To prevent from scratching the plastic surfaces, I recommend either using a plastic pry bar tool or cover the tip of your screwdriver with a thin micro fiber cloth.

Insert the blade of the screwdriver or panel removal tool in between the right (passenger) side of the dome light housing and the overhead console.

Gently pry out the light housing to release the metal retaining clip.

Install New Light Bulb
Insert the new light bulb in to the socket.

Tip - If you are installing an LED bulb, I recommend testing it before pushing the housing back in to the headliner. If the new LED bulb doesn't work, it might be polarized. Try pulling it out of the socket, flipping it around 180 degrees and re-installing it.
