Outback Headlight Bulbs Replacement Guide
How to change a burnt out low beam, high
beam, turn signal or side marker light bulb in a 2015 to 2019 Outback.

This automotive maintenance tutorial
was specifically written to assist owners of the fifth generation
(2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019
model years) Subaru Outback station wagon in changing a burnt out
low beam, high beam, front turn signal or side marker light bulb in
the headlight assemblies. Owners of other Subaru vehicles such as the Forester, Impreza, Legacy, XV Crosstrek, WRX, BRZ, SVX, Tribeca, Exiga, Trezia, Levorg and Baja may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The compatible replacement light bulb part numbers are as follows: Low Beam # H11, High Beam # 9005, Front Turn Signal # 7440A (or WY21W), Side Marker # 2825 (or W5W). No tools are needed to access and replace any of the light bulbs in either the driver or passenger side headlight housings. |

The first two steps
are to open the hood and move to the side of the vehicle with the burnt out
headlight bulb. The low beam headlight bulb is situated closer to the outside edge of the vehicle. The lens resembles a cloudy eye. Reach in behind the headlight assembly to access the green and black plastic base of the old low beam light bulb. Push in the release tab on the electrical connector before sliding it down and straight off the base of the old low beam light bulb. Rotate the base of the old light bulb 1/4 turn in the counterclockwise direction before pulling it straight out of the housing. |

Try to avoid
touching the glass part of the new halogen light bulb with your fingers or
anything greasy in the engine bay. If you do get the new bulb dirty, wipe it clean with a paper towel and some rubbing alcohol. The OEM low beam light bulb was a Philips H11 12V 55W. |

Install New Low Beam |
1/4 Turn Clockwise - Lock |
Push On Electrical Connector |
Insert the new
number H11 low beam light bulb
into the housing and rotate it 1/4 turn in the clockwise direction to secure
it into place. Push the power plug straight on to the base of the new low beam light bulb until it clicks securely into place. |

High Beam - Inner Corner |

Push Down Release Tab |
The high beam light
bulb is located closer to the inner corner of the headlight assembly. Reach into the engine bay to access the rear of the high beam housing. Push in the release tab on the electrical connector before sliding it straight off the base of the old high beam light bulb. |

Sylvania 9005 12V 60W |
Rotate the base of
the old high beam light bulb 1/4 turn in the counterclockwise direction
before pulling it straight out of the housing. The OEM high beam light bulb was a Sylvania 9005 12V 60W. |

Install New High Beam |
1/4 Turn Clockwise - Lock |
Avoid touching the
glass part of the new halogen light bulb with your fingers or anything
greasy in the engine bay. If you do get the new bulb dirty, clean it with a paper towel moistened with rubbing alcohol. Insert the new number 9005 high beam light bulb into the housing. Rotate it 1/4 turn in the clockwise direction to secure it into place. |

Push the electrical
connector straight on to the base of the new high beam light bulb until it
clicks securely into place. The front turn signal light bulb is located near the bottom middle section of the headlight housing. The turn signal bulb socket is situated under the high beam light bulb. |

Pull Out Old Light Bulb |
Push In New Light Bulb |
Rotate the grey
plastic turn signal bulb socket 1/4 turn in the counterclockwise direction
before pulling it straight out of the housing. Carefully pull the old turn signal bulb straight out of the socket. If you have trouble removing the old light bulb, try gently wiggling the light bulb back and forth while pulling it straight out. The OEM light bulb was part number WY21W which is the same as the 7440A or 7440NA. Push the new 7440A bulb straight into the socket. |

Re-insert the turn
signal light bulb and socket into the housing.
Rotate the socket 1/4 turn in the clockwise direction to secure it into place. The front side marker bulb socket is located near the outer corner of the headlight housing. Rotate the small grey bulb socket 1/4 turn in the counterclockwise direction before pulling it straight out of the housing. |

Pull Out Old Light Bulb |
Push In New Light Bulb |
Carefully pull the
old light bulb straight out of the socket. Push a new number 2825 (also known as "W5W") light bulb straight into the socket. If you would like to have brighter front side markers, install some compatible 2825 LED bulbs. |

Test New Headlight Bulbs |
Re-insert the front
side marker light bulb socket into the housing and rotate it 1/4 turn in the
clockwise direction to secure it into place. To test the new light bulbs, turn on the headlights, flash the high beams and activate the hazard signals. Be sure to record the bulb change in your vehicle's service records. For more,
