This automotive "how-to" guide was specifically written to assist owners of the 4th generation (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 & 2009) Toyota 4Runner SUV in replacing a burnt out brake, rear turn signal or reverse light bulb in the tail light assemblies.

Owners of other related Toyota or Lexus vehicles such as the Hilux, Tacoma, Land Cruiser, T100, SW4, FJ Cruiser, Fortuner and Lexus GX may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

Replacement tail light bulbs from Sylvania and other manufacturers including their part numbers are as follows: Brake # 7443, Rear Turn Signal # 7440A (992) and Reverse # 921.

No tools are needed to replace any of the tail light bulbs in an 03-09 Toyota 4Runner SUV.

Brake / Stop Light Bulb
The first two steps are to open the rear cargo liftgate and locate the small square tail light bulb access panel.

You can pry out the panel with your fingernails or use a flathead screwdriver.

The Brake Light bulb is located at the middle of the tail light assembly and is the only bulb socket connected by a wire harness.

Remove the socket from the assembly by rotating it 1/4 turn counter clockwise before pulling it straight out.

Pull the old # 7443 brake light bulb straight out from the socket and push in a new one.

Insert the bulb into the tail light assembly and rotate the socket 1/4 turn clockwise to secure it in place.

Remove it by rotating the socket 1/4 turn counter clockwise and pull it straight out of the tail light.

Pull the old # 921 reverse light bulb straight out of the socket and push in a new one.

If you would like to have brighter reverse lights, install some compatible 921 LED bulbs.

Insert the bulb back into the tail light assembly and rotate the socket 1/4 turn clockwise to secure it in place.
