| Like many
others, I was very disappointed to hear that the 2009
Fort Lauderdale Air & Sea Show had been cancelled as part of Fleet
Week this year. The good news was that the five ships docked at Port Everglades would be open for public tours for the first time since 9-11-01. I visited the Broward Navy Days website and registered for a morning tour of the U.S.S. Toledo (SSN 769) modern nuclear attack submarine. The other ships available for tours included the USS Forrest Sherman (DDG 98), the USS Ashland (LSD 48), the HMCS Preserver (AOR 510), and the USCGC Tahoma (WMEC 908). There was also a Riverine Squadron (RIVRON) Special Ops water craft display. |

| The boat tours and Fort Lauderdale Fleet Week 2009 was sponsored by Humana Healthcare Services. All of the tours were free but required pre-registration with a limited number of slots available. After the tour, our group was brought over to a table with souvenirs. The crew members explained that all of the proceeds from souvenir sales benefited the crew's recreation fund. | ||
