This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the 6th generation MK6 (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 & 2016) Volkswagen Jetta in changing a burnt out license plate light bulb in the trunk lid.

Owners of other VW Group vehicles with similar license plate light bulb housings such as the Passat, CC, Tiguan, Golf, Touareg, Beetle, GTI, SportWagen, Eos, Rabbit, Bora, Vento, Lavida, Audi A3, A4, S4, A6, S6, A7, A8, Q5, Q7, A5, S5, and TT may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A replacement bulb is part number 2825 from various manufacturers such as Sylvania, GE, Eiko and PIAA.

You may also use any other miniature wedge base bulbs such as the # 168, W5W, 194, 158 or a compatible LED unit.

The only tool needed to replace the bulbs is a small flathead screwdriver used to pry out the light housing from the trunk lid.

Gently Push Out Old Bulb
The first step is to locate the small black plastic tab on the left side of the license plate light bulb housing.

Gently press in the release tab with the small flathead screwdriver and pull down the left side of the housing.

Pull the housing out of the underside of the trunk lid.

Press the release button on the black plastic electrical connector and pull it straight off the housing.

Either pull the old bulb out of the socket with your fingers or very carefully push it out of the socket with the small flathead screwdriver.
