This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the S550 sixth generation 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 Ford Mustang in changing a weak, failing or faulty trunk lid support strut (also known as a prop rod, shock arm, spring or lift).

(The 7th generation S650 Ford Mustang is supposed to be released in 2022 as a 2023 model year vehicle.)

Owners of other Ford and Lincoln vehicles such as the Fusion, Taurus, Escape, EcoSport, Flex, Expedition, Bronco, Ranger, Transit, F-150, C-Max, Fiesta, Focus, Edge, MKZ, Continental, Corsair, Nautilus, Aviator and Navigator may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The OEM trunk lid support strut was marked as part number 620702 0345N 007/19 C 28 FR3B-76406A10-BB (also FR3Z6340610A and FR3Z76406A10A).

The compatible replacement part number may vary by model year, trim level and whether your car has a spoiler on the trunk lid or not. Please verify the correct part numbers for your Mustang before purchasing new struts.

If your Mustang is equipped with a spoiler on the top of the trunk lid, two compatible replacement strut part numbers are as follows: Tuff Support 613856 and Lift Supports Depot PM3865.

If your Mustang does NOT have a spoiler, here are two compatible replacement struts part numbers: Tuff Support 613858 and Lift Supports Depot PM3864.

The only tool needed to remove and replace the struts is a small flat head screwdriver.

The first step is to open the trunk lid. Then wedge a large towel, a piece of cardboard or some other item such as a roll of paper towels in between one of the support struts and the trunk opening to help prevent it from unexpectedly closing.

It would also be a good idea to have an assistant hold open the trunk lid while you are replacing the support struts to help avoid injuring yourself.

Partially Released Clip
Pull Socket Off Ball Mount
Pry Out Lower "C" Clip
I recommend only changing one support strut at a time to keep the trunk lid at least partially supported by the other strut.

Locate the small notch on the black metal "C" shaped retaining clip attached to the top and bottom of the support strut.

Insert the blade of your small flat head screwdriver into the notch and gently pry out the "C" shaped retaining clip.

You do not need to fully remove the "C" clip.

Just pry out the clip far enough so that you can pull the ball socket on the support strut off the ball mount attached to the trunk lid or the body panel near the trunk opening.

Please make sure your assistant is securely holding up the trunk lid before you detach the strut.

OEM Part Number
Repeat the process to release the retaining clip on the other side of the strut and pull the socket off the ball mount.

The OEM trunk lid support strut was marked as part number 620702 0345N 007/19 C 28 FR3B-76406A10-BB (also FR3Z6340610A and FR3Z76406A10A).

Please remember to double check the part numbers for your vehicle since they may vary depending on whether your Mustang is equipped with a spoiler or not.

Line Up New Strut
Release Clip - Push On
Attach Bottom of Strut
If both the ball mounts on the new strut and the ball sockets on the vehicle appear dry, apply a small amount of grease to the ball mounts.

Lubricating the ball mounts will help keep the struts from making a squeaking or groaning noise when the trunk lid is opened or closed.

Line up the new strut with the gas charged shock body located at the top near the trunk lid and the thinner metal bar situated at the bottom close to the trunk opening.

Gently pry out the "C" shaped metal retaining clip about 1/4" until you can pop the ball socket over the ball shaped mount on the trunk lid or trunk opening body panel.

Push To Secure Clip
Bottom Clip Secured
Top Clip Secured
Push on the center of the "C" clips to make sure they are fully seated.

Check that the top and bottom of the strut are securely attached to their ball mounts.

To test the new struts, close and open the trunk lid a few times.

Be sure to write down the strut change in your vehicle's service records.
