This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the S550 sixth generation 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 Ford Mustang in changing a burnt out cargo area light bulb located in the trunk.

(The 7th generation S650 Ford Mustang is supposed to be released in 2022 as a 2023 model year vehicle.)

Owners of other Ford and Lincoln vehicles such as the Fusion, Taurus, Escape, EcoSport, Flex, Expedition, Bronco, Ranger, Transit, F-150, C-Max, Fiesta, Focus, Edge, MKZ, Continental, Corsair, Nautilus, Aviator and Navigator may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The earlier 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 model years were equipped with a 2825 (also known as a W5W) cargo area light bulb.

If you would like to have a brighter trunk light that will also last much longer before burning out, install a 2825 LED bulb.

The only tool needed to remove the housing and change the bulb is either a small plastic pry bar tool or a flat head screwdriver.

The first two steps are to open the trunk lid and then move to the left (driver) side of the cargo area.

Insert the blade of the flat head screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool in between the top edge of the light housing and the carpeted trunk liner.

Remove Light Housing
Push In Release Button
Disconnect Power Plug
Gently pry out the light housing and remove it from the trunk liner.

Push in the release tab on the electrical connector and slide the power plug straight off the base of the light housing.

LED Part Number
This 2019 Mustang was equipped with an LED light unit.

For earlier model years, you'll need to pull out the old number 2825 light bulb and push in a new one.

If the old light bulb was recently turned on, be careful when you remove it. The bulb might still be hot enough to burn your fingers.

If you'd like to upgrade the light to a brighter LED unit, install a new 2825 LED bulb.

Tip - If you installed an LED bulb and it doesn't work, try removing the bulb from the socket, rotate it 180 degrees and push it back into its socket. Some LED bulbs are "polarized" and will only work when the "+" positive and "-" negative electrical contacts are in the correct orientation. If the bulb still doesn't turn on, check your fuse box for a blown electrical fuse.

Push In Connector
Re-Insert Wires
Pop In Light Housing
Push the electrical connector straight into the socket.

If the light doesn't turn on immediately, try opening and closing the trunk lid or press the "Unlock" button on the key fob to re-activate the interior lights.

Be sure to write down the bulb change in your vehicle's service records.
