This automotive
maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the sixth
generation (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021) GM Chevrolet Camaro in
changing the motor oil and replacing the oil filter on the Ecotec LTG 2.0
liter turbocharged inline four cylinder engine. (The steps should be similar for the LGX 3.6L V6, LT1 6.2L V8 and
the
6.2L LT4 supercharged V8.) The development and release of the 7th generation Camaro has been delayed, so the current sixth generation will probably continue into the 2022 and 2023 model years. Owners of other General Motors vehicles from Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac such as the Malibu, Impala, Bolt, Corvette, Trailblazer, Trax, Equinox, Blazer, Traverse, Tahoe, Suburban, Colorado, Silverado, Express, Encore, Envision, Enclave, Regal, Sierra, Terrain, Acadia, Yukon, Canyon, Savana, XT4, XT5, XT6, Escalade, CT4, CT5, CTS and CT6 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) oil filter part number is ACDelco PF64. A few compatible replacement aftermarket replacement oil filters with their part numbers are as follows: Fram PH10060, Royal Purple 10-48, Purolator PL12222, Mobil 1 M1-113 and EcoGard X2222. The tools needed to complete this procedure include a floor jack with two jack stands or automotive ramps, a 15mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet, an automotive funnel and an oil filter wrench such as the Lisle 63600 (optional). The total oil capacity specification of the Ecotec LTG 2.0L turbo I4 engine (with the integrated oil cooler) for an oil change with a filter replacement is 5.0 U.S. quarts (or 4.7L) of new SAE 5W-30 oil. (If your Camaro is equipped with the 1LE "Track Performance Package" which includes an external engine oil cooler, the capacity is 5.5 U.S. quarts or 5.2L.) Warm up the engine for a few minutes to help suspend any contaminants within the old oil and also so that the old oil will drain out more quickly. The next few steps are to drive the car on to a level surface, shift the transmission into "Park" and turn off the ignition. Engage the emergency / parking brake and place wheel chocks on both sides of the rear tires to prevent the vehicle from moving. Open the hood, partially remove the oil dipstick an inch or two and twist off the oil filler cap in the counterclockwise direction. Removing the oil fill cap and lifting up the dipstick will help prevent a vacuum from forming and also allow the old oil to drain out more quickly. |

Raise Front of Car |
Passenger Side of Engine |
Black Oil Pan - Silver Bolt |
Make sure the
emergency / parking brake is engaged and the wheel chocks are securely in
place on both sides of the rear tires to make sure the car does not move.
Carefully raise the front of the vehicle and support it with at least two jack stands. I chose to only raise the passenger side of the car since the drain bolt is on that side of the pan. Slide under the engine bay with the used oil catch container, the 15mm socket and a 3/8" drive ratchet. Locate the black metal oil pan and the silver metal drain bolt. The drain bolt is situated at the rear passenger side corner of the oil pan. (The drain bolt on this 2020 Camaro also has a Torx star bit drive in the center. Although I can't imagine why you wouldn't just use a 15mm socket with a ratchet.) |

Oil Filter Location |
Used Oil Catch Basin |
Loosen Counterclockwise |
The bright blue OEM
oil filter is situated on the driver side of the oil pan. Slide the used oil catch container to just below the drain bolt. Loosen the drain bolt by turning it in the counterclockwise direction with the 15mm socket and a 3/8" drive ratchet. |
||
Spin Out Drain Bolt |
Draining Out Old Oil |
Replace Drain Bolt |
Spin out the old
bolt the rest of the way by hand to prevent it from falling down into the
used oil catch container. Be careful when you remove the drain bolt. The old oil might still be hot enough to burn your fingers. Inspect the old gasket on the drain plug and replace it with a new one if necessary. The OEM oil drain plug gasket or "washer" part number is GM 12616850. Allow the old oil to drain out for at least a few minutes or until the flow slows down to just an occasional drip. Clean off the drain hole with a clean shop rag or a paper towel. Spin in the drain bolt a few turns by hand in the clockwise direction to help prevent it from becoming cross threaded. Continue tightening the drain bolt in the clockwise direction with the 15mm socket and a 3/8" drive ratchet until it is snug. If you have a torque wrench, the service manual specification for tightening the drain bolt is 18 lb-ft. Double check that the drain bolt is tight before moving on to the next steps. |
||
Oil Filter Wrench |
Loosen Old Oil Filter |
Spin Off Counterclockwise |
If your Camaro has
previously had the oil changed at a dealership or a quick lube service
station, you will probably need an oil filter wrench to remove the old oil
filter since it may have been over tightened. I highly recommend buying the Lisle 63600 filter wrench since it makes removing stubborn or stuck oil filters extremely easy. Attach the oil filter wrench to a short extension bar and the 3/8" drive ratchet. (The Lisle 63600 will only loosen oil filters and does not work in the opposite direction to tighten filters.) Once the old filter is loose, spin it off in the counterclockwise direction. Allow the old oil to drain out from the filter and the filter receptacle for at least a few minutes. |
||
Dip Finger In New Oil |
Lubricate Rubber O-Ring |
Spin On New Oil Filter |
Dip your finger
into some new oil and lubricate the rubber o-ring gasket on the new oil
filter. Lubricating the rubber o-ring gasket on the new filter will help it to form a better seal, prevent oil leaks and also make it easier to remove the filter during the next oil change. Make sure the gasket from the old filter is not still attached to the engine. Spin on the new filter in the clockwise direction. Continue tightening the new filter in the clockwise direction to about 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn past finger tight. Try to avoid over tightening the new filter to prevent from damaging the rubber o-ring gasket which could lead to an oil leak. |
||
Lower Car From Stands |
Insert Automotive Funnel |
Pour In New Oil |
Double check that
the oil drain bolt and new oil filter are tight. Carefully lower the vehicle from the jack stands by using the floor jack. Insert the automotive funnel into the oil fill hole. The Ecotec LTG 2.0L turbocharged I4 engine's oil capacity specification in the owner's manual for an oil change with a filter replacement is 5.0 U.S. quarts (or 4.7 liters). It is much better to have slightly less oil than necessary in an engine than to run an engine that has been overfilled. I recommend only pouring in about 4.5 U.S. quarts of new SAE 5W-30 oil at first. Then temporarily replace the oil filler cap and push down the dipstick. |
||
Replace Oil Fill Cap |
Push Down Dipstick |
Check Oil Level |
According to the
owner's manual, to properly check the oil level the vehicle should be on a
level surface and engine should have been turned off for at least two
hours.
For the best accuracy, the engine should have been off for at least two hours or longer before checking the oil level. If you are unable to wait two hours before checking the oil level, the engine must be off for at least 15 minutes if the engine is warm or at least 30 minutes if the engine is cold. Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean with a paper towel, fully re-insert it and pull it out again to check the oil level. |
||
Replace Dipstick |
Check Fill Cap - Tight |
Oil Change Complete |
If necessary,
slowly pour in more oil and reputedly check the oil level on the dipstick
until it reaches up to or just below the top of the cross hatched area on
the dipstick that indicates the "MAX" (maximum) or "F" (full) line. You may not need to pour in the entire 5.0 U.S. quarts of new oil in order to reach the full line on the dipstick depending on how long you allowed the old oil to drain out. Replace the dipstick and make sure the oil fill cap is tight. Be sure to record the oil change in your vehicle's service records. To reset the "Engine Oil Life System" (or "Oil Life Meter"), follow these steps: 1. Display the "Remaining Oil Life" on the "DIC" (Driver Information Center) 2. Press and hold the "SEL" button on the screen while the oil life display is active. 3. The oil life should change to "100%". 4. The "Change Engine Oil Soon" message should no longer be displayed. An alternative method to reset the oil life system is as follows: 1. Display the "Remaining Oil Life" on the "DIC". 2. Fully press down and release the accelerator (gas) pedal three times within five seconds. It would be a good idea to check your parking spot, driveway or garage for spots of fresh oil during the next few days which might indicate a leak from the drain bolt or the new oil filter. The oil change and oil filter replacement service interval specification in the owner's manual is every 7,500 miles or at least once per year. Please
