Like a few
thousand other lucky South Florida race fans, I recently received a
large envelope in the mail from Team Penske and Marlboro.
It contained a voucher for two free tickets to the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series "Grand Prix of Miami" championship race and also the Firestone Indy 300 to be held at the Homestead-Miami Speedway on October 10th 2009. We arrived at the track about an hour before the Rolex Grand-Am race was scheduled to start at 1 PM. I thought that we had arrived early enough to score two of the "Paddock Passes" being given out by Team Penske to the first 1,500 voucher holders. The line of race fans with Team Penske free ticket vouchers extended about a quarter mile into the parking lot. So although we didn't get free paddock passes, we did get our free tickets and mesh backpacks, hats and other "Team Penske" stuff. |

The winners of the race in the Daytona Prototype class were Joao Barbosa and Hurley Haywood in the Brumos Racing Porsche. Jon Fogarty and Alex Gurney in the Gainsco Pontiac placed fourth in the race and won the overall Rolex Grand-AM series championship title. We were able to get up close and personal with the cars by purchasing the $25 paddock passes.

One of the best spots to take pictures of the Daytona Prototype and GT Class cars on the track was at the "fish bowl" turn on the road course. I had to stand behind a short fence placed just in front of the permanent safety fence. The safety fence has several small cut outs for the professional photographers. To get an unobstructed shot of the cars, I had to zoom past the first fence and through the cut out in the safety fence.

During the race, I captured a series of short video clips with my Canon S5 IS digital camera. I edited these together into one short movie that can be viewed by clicking on the blue link below. The video is encoded in the Windows Media Video (WMV) format, runs about 3 minutes long, and has a file size of 43 MB.
