Lake Havasu
is one of the most popular destinations in the Southwestern USA for
boaters and personal watercraft (PWC) enthusiasts. The starting point for most boaters from California, Arizona and Nevada is Lake Havasu City. This small town only has about 56,000 permanent residents. It gets packed with thousands of tourists during Spring Break and any three day holiday weekend such as those for Labor Day, Memorial Day, and the 4th of July. Lake Havasu is part of the Colorado River that extends from the tip of Lake Havasu City in Arizona to 45 miles south at the Parker Dam. Lake Havasu has about four hundred and fifty miles of shoreline made up of desert sand, scenic rock cliffs and sparse vegetation. |

Lake Havasu is an excellent place to practice water sports or a variety of other activities. Some of the most common recreational pursuits are swimming, fishing, water-skiing, wakeboarding, riding jet skis or other PWCs (personal watercraft), speed boating, sailing, kayaking, windsurfing, rock climbing, cliff jumping, canoeing, biking, hiking the Chemehuevi Mountains, birdwatching, camping, and just lounging on the sandy lake side beaches.

I saw that some pontoon boats and houseboats were equipped with barbecues that hung off their side railings. Unfortunately, our rental boat didn't have a BBQ so we just brought a few snacks with us each day of our trip on Lake Havasu. There were also a "World Famous Billy Burger" boat and the "Big Orange Boat" selling classic American backyard barbeque options.
Some of the more substantial dining options back in Lake Havasu City include the Barley Bros Restaurant & Brewery, Shugrues Restaurant, JB's, Javelina Cantina, Black Bear Diner, the Mudshark Brewing Co., Captain's Table, Cha-Bones, Papa Bear's, Frigate Restaurant, El Mariachi Mexican Restaurant, Rusty's, Casa Bonita, Santiago's, MadDog's Grill, Off the Grill, Mario's Italian Restaurant, Big John's Steakhouse, Chili Charlie's, the Makai Cafe and the Flame Broiler.
Lots of Lake Havasu boaters probably grab a quick bite to eat and go to bed after a long day out on the lake baking in the sun. Those with some energy left over for partying head over to the Kokomo Havasu nightclub which has a pool, four levels and multiple bars. Other nightlife options in Lake Havasu City include the Tiki Terrace Sports Bar, Firehouse Bar, Jake's Bar, Desert Martini, Gallagher's Pub, The London Bridge Brewery, The Office Cocktail Lounge, BJ's Tavern, Homestead Saloon, Golden Horseshoe Saloon, London Arms Pub, The Red Room, The Naked Turtle, and Bikini Beach Club.

Golfers can enjoy the world class golf courses that are close to Lake Havasu such as The Refuge Golf Club, the London Bridge Golf Club, the Emerald Canyon Golf Course, the Havasu Island Golf Course, and the Havasu Island Golf Course.
Fishing enthusiasts will be pleased to find that Lake Havasu has a healthy population of freshwater fish such as largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, sunfish, striped bass, crappie, catfish, carp, stripers and razorback suckers. The lake was also stocked with white sturgeon back in the late 1960's.
One of the easiest and most relaxing ways to see Lake Havasu is on the deck of the Dixie Bell paddlewheel river boat, which costs about $20 per person. For a more exciting experience, go on a Bluewater Jet Boat Tour that races up and down the coast for two hours.
