The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) just released a report that found many popular car models have sub par headlights after they were all tested in common driving scenarios.
If your vehicle is one of the cars in the group with “Poor”, “Marginal” or even “Acceptable” headlights, you should consider replacing them with HID (high intensity discharge) or LED (light emitting diode) headlight bulbs.

Brighter headlights would definitely help you avoid a crash by helping you spot a pedestrian, bicyclist, motorcyclist, a car with burnt out tail lights or even an animal in the road such as a deer or a cow.
P.S.
If you have a Toyota Prius, congratulations. It was the only vehicle to receive a “Good” rating for its headlights.
