Rainforest Zoo & Gardens - Hilo, Big Island, Hawaii
Pictures and visitor info from a trip to the Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo & Gardens located in Hilo, Big Island, Hawaii.
Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo & Gardens is a totally free attraction
situated in Hilo on the "wet" east side of the Big Island of Hawaii.
Hilo City receives about 130 inches of rain per year, which has helped create the lush green foliage and colorful flowers that surround the animal habitats.
The unique geographical location of the Panaewa Zoo lends it the title of "the only natural tropical rainforest zoo in the United States".
To reach the Panaewa Zoo using a GPS unit, enter 800 Stainback Hwy, Hilo, HI 96720 as the address. It is located a few miles south of Hilo and the airport off Hwy 11.
For more information via phone, contact the zoo staff at (808) 959-7224. Visitors are welcome daily from 9 AM to 4 PM.
|A few of the 150 animals that reside on the 12 acres at the Panaewa Zoo include a white bengal tiger, cotton top tamarin monkeys, capuchins, Asian forest tortoises, toucans, parrots, macaws, white-faced whistling tree ducks, a crowned crane, vultures, binturongs, tropical squirrels, two toed sloths, lemurs, turtles, gallinules, feral goat, geese, Nigerian dwarf goats, llama, mini zebu, Kona nightingales, bearded dragon, green iguanas, black swans, axis deer, and giant anteaters.|
