| Smathers Beach
is the largest beach in Key West stretching for about two miles on the
southern coast of the island. This beach is known for its calm waters, which makes it a popular spot for swimmers, kayakers, and sunbathers. During our visit, we rented a kayak from one of the road side vendors. I believe the cost was about $15 for two hours. You can also rent beach chairs, inflatable rafts, and small multi hull sailboats. It's not uncommon for tropical storms and hurricanes to wash away some of the sand at Smathers Beach. Luckily, the city of Key West is in the habit of replenishing the sand about every other year. Smathers Beach is located on South Roosevelt Blvd between the Key West International Airport and Bertha Street. |
